Special equipment
Paraplegic hand controls are available (for certain models only) at no extra cost in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Skukuza and Pretoria. Vehicle must be returned to one of the above stations, 72 hour advance reservations essential. Baby seats are also available from most branches at R100 per rental.

Terms of Payment
A cash deposit required is negotiable at the time of rental and final adjustments are made upon termination. Only bank guaranteed cheque accepted. Alternatively Avis or Avis recognised charge cards such as American Express, Diners Club, Visa and MasterCard may be used to waiver the cash deposit.

Driver’s licence
Renters must be in possession of a valid unendorsed driver’s licence. The minimum age for rental is 23 years when payment by Avis accepted credit card, Visa or Mastercard and 21 years when payment is by Diners or Amex card or 25 when payment is by cash. Driver’s licence must have been valid for a minimum period of 5 years. It is a legal requirement in R.S.A. to be in possession of your original driver’s licence at all times whilst driving a vehicle.

Personal service
While kilometres are always taken from Avis station to station, we meet our customers personally at airports, railway stations or elsewhere. A nominal collection and delivery fee will be applied in the case of this service being required.

Weekend rentals
Payment of Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Loss Waiver covers 80% of the total responsibility on weekend rentals. No additional drivers will be permitted on weekend rentals countrywide. Please Note: A minimum authorisation amount of R5000 is required for all weekend rentals payable by credit card.

Additional Drivers
All drivers must be listed on the applicable rental agreement. There is a charge for additional drivers. If an unlisted driver is involved in an accident, or theft of the vehicle, the renter will be liable for full damage/ replacement costs.

Petrol
This is not included in our rates. Cars are delivered full and the customer is charged for full refill upon termination of rental. Fuel consumption is gauged from customer service centre to customer service centre

Over the border rentals
Any renter wishing to enter Namibia/Lesotho/Botswana must be in possession of a Letter of Authority from Avis, obtainable from the rental agent at the time of rental. Note: For rentals originating in the Republic and driven into Namibia and Botswana, conditions of CDW and TLW of these countries will apply. Kindly consult rental sales agent. 

One-way rentals
Vehicles may be collected from one Avis location in South Africa and returned to another, however, this may be subject to charge. The fee will not apply within the greater metropolitan areas eg. Cape Town to Stellenbosch; Durban to Pietermaritzburg; Johannesburg to Pretoria. Where the one-way drop off fee applies, a charge of R342 will be levied, with the exception of rentals from Richards Bay to Durban (R171) and rentals from the Eastern Cape to Cape Town (R570).

Vehicles may be taken into Mozambique and Zimbabwe by exception, but may not terminate in either of these countries. Vehicles must be returned to any branch within South Africa or Namibia, however, vehicles terminating in Namibia are subject to the standard one-way drop off fee

No vehicle may be taken into Malawi, Angola or Zambia under any circumstances.

These fees apply to all deliveries and collections in South Africa within a 25km radius of an Avis location. For distances greater than 25km, a rate of R4.56 per km will be applied

Value added tax
All charges reflected on rates brochures are inclusive of VAT.

Minimum rates charge
Rates are calculated for a minimum period of 24 hours from the time of pick-up to time of drop-off.

Damage and Theft Waivers
Rates include limited coverage of passenger liability and third party motor liability. Such cover being subject to the terms and conditions of the Avis policy and insurance as is customary in this country. Cover for loss by fire is also included together with damage to the Avis car but may not include loss or damage through civil unrest.

Rental Contract Fee
A rental contract fee of R22.80 is applicable to all rentals. There is a legal requirement to store documents for a period of 5 years. The fee is for the cost for the administering, storing and retrieving all rental contracts.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
Avis offers you the the choice of two optional Collision Damage Waiver Insurances.
Option 1 – Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) Limited Cover
Choosing this option, means that in the event of an accident, the renter is responsible for up to a specified amount as indicated on the Rates Table, for damage of the vehicle and/or any part thereof, or the cost of damage repair, whichever is the lower.
Option 2 – Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) Super Cover
This option means that the renter will be liable for a reduced, non-waivable excess which lowers the responsibility of the renter for payment arising from collision damage caused to the vehicle or part thereof.

Note: In the event of an accident occurring when the vehicle was not driven by the renter, or other authorized driver as nominated on the rental agreement, the renter will be responsible for the full damage to or loss of the vehicle. The renter will also be responsible if the vehicle was driven on unsuitable roads, if the renter was driving negligently or if no other car, animal or object was involved.

Declining Option 1 and 2
The renter has the option to decline either CDW or SCDW, in which case the renter is liable for the full amount of damages incurred, or the full responsibility amount (as reflected in the Avis Rates Table) and Avis will require an additional deposit to cover current responsibility

Accident Administration Fee
As the responsibility amount on the waivers only contributes towards the repair costs of the vehicle, an administration fee of R399 per accident will be levied to cover the costs of processing the claim. This includes items such as assessor fees, quote gathering and legal services.

Theft Loss Waiver (TLW)
Avis offers you the choice of two optional Theft Loss Waiver Insurances.
Option 1 – Theft Loss Waiver (TLW) Limited cover
Choosing this option means that in the event of theft of a vehicle or part thereof, the renter is responsible for up to an amount as indicated on the Rates Table*, for the replacement of the applicable loss by theft. Personal property is not covered. (*This value is double for weekend rentals)
Option 2 – Super Theft Loss Waiver (STLW) Super cover
Choosing this option means that the renter will be liable for a reduced, non-waivable excess, which lowers the responsibility of the renter for payment arising from the theft of a vehicle or part thereof (unless breach of contract or negligence occurs). Personal property is not covered.

Declining Option 1 and 2
In the event that the renter declines TLW, the renter will be responsible for the full amount of damages incurred or the full responsibility amount reflected in the Avis Rates Table. If TLW is declined, Avis will require an additional deposit to cover current responsibility.

Note: In the case of CDW and TLW for rentals originating in SA, and driven into Namibia or Botswana the conditions for CDW and TLW of these countries will apply. Please consult your Avis Rental Sales Agent.

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)
The renter who subscribes to Avis Personal Accident Insurance as well as for all other passengers will be covered for accidental bodily injury while driving, riding in, getting into or out of the Avis vehicle. The insurance will apply to persons up to the age of 75. The death benefit in respect of persons under 15 years of age shall be limited to R10 000. The benefit will be divided equally among all occupants of the insured vehicle.
The insured shall give immediate written or telegraphic notice of any claim and in any event within 90 days of injury.
If within 24 months from the date of an accident, bodily injury result in death or disability, an amount will be paid in accordance with the benefits below.

Injuries resulting in permanent total disability from following usual occupation or any other occupation for which such person is fitted by knowledge or training.

Shall mean all costs and expenses necessarily incurred, within 24 months of the defined event for artificial aids, prosthesis, medical, surgical, dental, nursing home or hospital treatment as a result in accidental bodily injury. A deduction of R250 will apply.

Note: The policy does not cover any loss from intentionally self-inflicted injuries, suicide or any attempt threat, sickness or disease, full time or declared or undeclared war. Full details are contained in the Master Policy available for inspection at Avis Southern Africa Head Office at Isando.
