On the slopes above The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and Table Bay is the seaside suburb of Green Point. Along with Sea Point, Green Point became home to well-heeled segments of Cape Society in the 1940s and 1950s. With the development f the seafron, many of the area`s numerous apartment blocks are in demand once again as South Africans and wealthy foregein investors clamour for the sea views. As expected, the few hotels here are equally exclusive.
Visitors leaving the Waterfront from the Green Point exit will immediately encounter a majestic old building resembling a fort.
This is the century-old New Somerset Hospital which houses the Cape Medical Museum.
The museum`s displays reflect the early days of medical treatment - particularly the dental practices of Victorian society. One of the more curious exhibits is the photograph of James Barry, the first physician to carry out a Caesarian section in the country. Upon his death or so it is rumoured, Barry was discovered to bea women.
