RMS Athens
This site is quite shallow and as a result the surge can be quite strong here. The RMS Athens was a steamer of the Union Steamship Co. She was wrecked on 17 May 1865 with the loss of the whole crew of 29. While trying to steam out of the bay to escape the storm the heavy seas swamped the boiler fires and the ship drifted to its present site.

The ship broke up rapidly when it hit the reef with only the engine block visible the next day.

Average depth: 5m

Maximum depth: 7m

How to get there:
Take Beach Road from Sea Point to Mouille. Pass Fritz Sonnenberg Road ont the right and look out for the car park on the left. The wreck's engine block can be seen about 75m out to sea. The easiest approach is by way of the parallel gullies leading to the site.
