The Romelia

This site is cold and clear after a south-easterly wind has blown. The surge can be very strong on the southern side and there is a strong suction through a hole on the Llandudno (northern) side of the wreck, so this site should only be dived when conditions are perfect. This dive is not recommended for novice divers.
The Romelia was a Liberian oil tanker that was on route to a Taiwanese breaker's yard together with the Antipolis.

She foundered on Sunset Rocks on 29 July 1977.Both ships were in tow when the cable snapped in one of Cape Town's notorious winter storms. The ship has interesting portholes and fittings to swim and peer through. Beware of suction through the hull. There are dense kelp forests around the Romelia and you are likely to see colourful invertebrates crafish, hottentot and other small fish.
Average depth: 12m               Maximum depth: 25m

How to get there:
Take the Llandudno turnoff which is about 8km from the Camps Bay police station and follow the Sandy Bay signs. There is very little parking during summer weekends, and you may have to ask the person controlling the access boom to let you drive in and drop your gear off. It is an easy walk down to the rocks from where a little clambering brings you to the water's edge. You can enter off one of the flat rocks or into one of the gullies. It is a swim of approximately 200m to the wreck.
