SAS Pietermaritzburg (1994)

This site is best dived during the winter months. It should be reasonably unaffected by surge as it is quite deep. The SAS Pietermaritzburg was formerly the HMS Pelorus and led the D-day invasion of Normandy in WW2. It was bought by the Soutgh African Navy in 1947 for use as a training vessel and was later converted to a minesweeper.

The Pietermaritzburg was scuttled on 12 November 1994 to form an arificial reef. It lies straight up on the sand. The ship is in very good condition, making for an eerie dive.

Average depth: 16m

Maximum depth: 20m on the sand

How to get there:
The SAS Pietermaritzburg is located about 2km north of the Millers Point slipway. Several dive charters launch from here and it is only a short boat trip to the wreck
