The Schuilenberg (1756)

The sea has to be very flat if you want to dive this site as the wreck is in the surf zone and the surge can be tremendous. The Schuilenberg was wrecked on 3 June 1756 while carrying provisions from Table Bay to False Bay. All that remains of the wreck are three cast-iron cannon that are partly buried in sand. This is not a scenic dive but you may enjoy the historic aspect of the dive.

The cannon are shallow enough to be snorkeled on, and this may be a better option since it is quite a mission to get to the site with all your scuba gear.

Average depth:7m

Maximum depth: 10m

How to get there:
The Schuilenberg is located off Second Beach at Clifton. Take the steps leading down to Second Beach, Clifton, while keeping to the right. To the right of the steps, about 20-30m out to sea, is a small, round rock known locally as Cherry Rock. Behind it is another flat rock which does not always protrude above the surface. The wreck site is directly behind the rocks towards the edge of the
kelp beds.
