The SS South African Seafarer (1966)

This site is best dived during summer when the south-easter clears the water. The Seafarer was a 8000 ton Safmarine freighter that was wrecked during a gale on 1 July 1966. The ship broke up quickly and most of the cargo was lost. The sea bed resembles a junkyard, with the huge propeller shaft and countless unidentifiable machine parts lying around.

Most of the non-ferous fittings were removed shortly after the wrecking. All 63 crew members and 12 passengers were rescued by helicopter.

Average depth: 5m

Maximum depth: 8m

How to get there:
The Seafarer lies 50-75m offshore slightly to the left of Green Point lighthouse. Apparantly this site used to be a shore dive but the steps leading down to the entry point have been removed and the only way to get there now is by boat launhed from the slipway in Three Ancor Bay or from the V & A Waterfront.
