The Wrecks of Smitswinkel Bay

Smitswinkel Bay is quite sheltered and since the wrecks are quite deep the effect of large swell is dampened. Five wrecks were scuttled by the navy in the early 1970s to form an arificial reef. This has proved to be a success and now teems with a large variety of fish and other marine life. The wrecks are the SAS Transvaal, the SAS Good Hope (both former navy frigates), the Rockeater (a diamond

dredger), the Princess Elizabeth and the Oratava (two fishing trawlers). The two frigates and the dredger lie upright and this makes for a very spectacular dive. Remember to take some artificial light with because this really is a very deep dive. The wrecks are covered with lots of pretty white, red, yellow and mauve soft corals. You'll also sea sponges, sea-fans and starfish.

Average depth: 35m          Maximum depth:40m

How to get there:
The wrecks lie in the middle of Smitswinkel Bay about 4km from Millers Point and are best reached by boat launched from Miller's Point.
