Vulcan Rock

This site can be very clear but icy cold. It is often successful as a drift dive and generally for the more experienced diver due to the depths you can reach and the current often present. Vulcan Rock is a large pinnacle rising to about 5m below the surface. It is covered in colourful marine growth such as hard and soft cold-water coral, nudibranchs, deep water cories and crayfish.

Many playful seals are present and fish such as hottentot, galjoen, and other species are plentiful. An open cave sits at about 19 metres.

Average depth:
25m

Maximum depth: 40m

How to get there:
Vulcan Rock is a blinder off the Karbonkelberg, to the south-west of Hout Bay. The blinder breaks at all except the highest spring tide and can be seen from the sea. It is a short boat trip from Hout Bay Harbour. Most of the dive shops and charter boats run trips to this spot in the summer months.
