The Gary Player Country Club course has become known all over the world as the venue for the annual Two Million Dollar Golf Challenge, when fans in their tens of thousands witness the challenging games of the world's best players.

This Gary Player designed course offers a championship level of challenge par none.

This pristine Golfing Estate is one of South Africa's acclaimed new golf courses, situated on one of the most dramatic sites on the beautiful Tsitsikamma coastline. The course is built high on the undulating topography of the East head at Knysna, with spectacular views over the Knysna Lagoon on one side, and the Indian Ocean on the other side.

Designers Ronald Fream and David Dale of Golf Plan, California, have compared the look of Sparrebosch to a combination of Gleneagles in the Scottish Highlands and Pebble Beach on the Monterey Peninsula. The front nine play inland, and the back nine cascade down the slopes of the East head towards the ocean.

It has been built on a rugged and steep site that golf carts are unanimously preferred in playing a round of golf, and a continuous cart path snakes its way around the 18 holes.

However, the toughest hole on the course greets you on the first tee. This par-5 opener involves a carry over the Sparrebos forest with your second shot, from one fairway to another, and the approach shot uphill to an undulating green. This is stroke one, and it sets the tone for a golfing experience with a difference

Here, wildlife can often be seen sharing the fairways with the golfers, such as buffaloes, lions, leopards, impalas, kingfishers, hippos and giraffes. The Hans Merensky Golf Course prides itself with the abundance of wild animals on its astonishingly beautiful par 72 layout which borders South Africa's largest Game Reserve, the Kruger National Park.

It features a truly spectacular layout and it is impossible to single out one excellent hole. The short par three 8th hole, for instance, only measures 155 meters, but the tee shot is an intimidating one to a small green which is flanked by crocodile-infested waters, with thick bush to the back and to the right of it.

Another par three worthy to mention is the 17th, measuring 173 meters, with a long carry over a big waterhole which is home to crocodiles and a herd of hippos, all of which can be seen as one tentatively crosses the hazard on a low wooden bridge.

From 1985, for seven consecutive years, the Hans Merensky CC staged the popular Phalaborwa Classic, part of the Sunshine Tour. Fulton Allem took the title three times in a row. The four Pappas brothers (Craigen, Sean, Deane and Brendan), who all have turned professional and have played for Greece at one time or another, all grew up here and learnt their golf at this course.

Arabella's championship golf course, designed by architect Peter Matkovich, has received the Golf Digest Magazine's award for the best new golf course in South Africa. The course, a challenging yet enjoyable venue, aims to be one of the top ten courses in the country.

The white sands and blue waters of Table Bay embrace the fairways of the Milnerton Golf Course, one of South Africa's loveliest links-style courses.

Founded in 1885, the Royal Cape Golf Club is South Africa's oldest and most exclusive club featuring a course with narrow fairways lined by trees. A true championship course, having hosted the South African Open eleven times and the South African Amateur Championships eight times, it has recently undertaken a reconstruction programme of all eighteen greens strictly to the specifications of the United States Golf Association.
