A stream known as the Molweni (stream of high cliffs) cuts a deep ravine in one part of Kloof. This ravine is the 4.47 square kilometre Krantzkloof Nature Reserve. The town is also home to several state and private schools including the prestigious St. Mary's Diocesan School for Girls, Kloof. Kloof starts from Field's Hill and borders Hillcrest with the M13 freeway intersecting it.

It also features several shopping malls and the Kloof Country Club.

The leafy suburb is known for its lingering mist, winding roads and overgrown vegetation. Its development was catalysed by people moving inland from the humid city and suburbs of Durban in search of a cooler climate.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the development of the traditional Kloof houses occurred. These normally consisted of four to six bedrooms and at least three reception rooms and were built on sites of at least one acre (4,000 m²). Many of the houses have slate roofs, a large swimming pool, small guest houses and tennis courts.

Examples of these can be found in the elite areas of Kloof. Notably the area close to the golf course known as Millionaire Mile and the Everton area. The South African property market, though still undervalued has seen some high growth recently and Kloof houses sell for about 2,000,000 South African Rand which is well above the regional average.

The average income level in Kloof has declined over the past 15 years as people from the middle-income areas of Pinetown and Westville settled into smaller houses that were built on land sub-divided by the larger property owners.
