BAZARUTO ISLAND - MOZAMBIQUE
Marlin and sail fishing charters - Bazaruto Island - Mozambique

Marlin fishing charters Bazaruto Island, MozambiqueTourism on the archipelago was actually introduced by Joaquim Alves due to the Black Marlin potential of these waters. It is the only place in Africa to have produced Black Marlin in excess of 1000 pounds.

The current All-African record was caught in November 1998, a fish of 1298 lbs. Since the archipelago has reopened its doors in the mid eighties, and because of the excellent sail fishing, the marlin potential has not really been exploited. But the excellent catches made in the last 4 years, in small competitions has showed that the island ranks tops in the world for big black marlin.

FISHING GROUNDS
It is difficult to have a set time for this, as in summer we can most times catch fish 10 minutes away from the lodge, but as rule, fishing grounds are about 20 (south point) to 35 minutes (north point) away from the lodge.
Species, Sizes & Seasons
The archipelago has a vast variety of species to be targeted year round on conventional, spinning or fly tackle.
King Mackerel (Cuda)
very abundant year round. Fish up to 40 Kg caught. Average size around 8 Kg. Queen Mackerel (Snoek), very abundant from April to July. Caught five minutes from lodge at that season. Great fun on spinning outfits. Average 6 Kg.
Wahoo
fairly abundant, especially in October and November and April – May (taking into consideration other areas of southern Mozambique). Average about 16 Kg, and up to 31 Kg. Dorado- fairly common in summer (November to April)
Tuna
Good size bonitos are caught year round and can be great fun on spinning and fly. Skipjack present in summer, as well as Yellowfin, which can attain sizes up to 30 Kg.
Kingfish
A very large family which are year round present. So far the following has been seen or caught: Golden-, Bigeye-, Brassy-, Bluefin-, Yellow-spotted, Bludger and Giant kingfish (that can attain sizes of + 40 Kg. and 20 / 30 Kg catches are fairly common). The Bludger kingfish frequently form shoals of thousands, making perfect prey for fly fishermen.
Other common catches
Prodigal son, Queen-fish, Green job-fish, Bonefish, Wolf-herring, Springer, Scads, Garfish, etc. as well as different shark species and skates, which can be caught either from the shore or of the boat.
Marlin
In the first month of the 2001 season (despite very few boats fishing for them) two big fish have been caught, an 840 lbs and a 621 lbs. Most fish are caught on either live or skip trolling baits. A lot of smaller fish (in the 200 lbs range) are frequently caught every year on sailfish baits.
Sail Fishing
This has become the archipelago’s most popular fishing, and rightly so, as with the right conditions one can expect a large number of strikes, with double and triple strikes being very frequent. Sailfish are present year round, although in larger numbers from the end of May to October. Sizes reach up to about 60 kg, although the average fish will be around 35 Kg. All fish are tagged and released. Contrary to other places in Southern Mozambique, sailfish here came very shallow and sometimes take Rapalas and lures intended for other game fish. Most fish are caught on trolling lures and skirts with halfbeaks or strip baits.
