The Southern Region Area is an outdoor adventure enthusiast paradise offering hiking trails, mountain biking trails, canoeing, white water rafting, mountain climbing, absailing and much more in a remarkable setting. Close by river lodges along the Vaal River offer some of the best angling and fly fishing opportunities in South Africa.
For trail enthusiasts, the Dome Bergland Nature Park near Potchefstroom, where a meteorite plunged into the planet millions of years ago, throwing up subterranean rock formations in a spectacular dome - offering game and bird watching trails, mountain sports like rock climbing and absailing.

Not forgetting the Hartbeespoort Cableway which is close to a popular paragliding centre.
A number of hunting outfitters offer trophy and biltong hunting, including bow hunting.
On the more luxurious side, Sun City and the Palace of the Lost City offer golf on two spectacular , world class courses and the chance to ride the waves at the Valley of Waves or take your courage in both hands and ride the enormous Temple of Courage. Yachting and other water sports are also offered at Sun City and all over the North West Province.

For the daring, diving fraternity, there is the famed Wondergat near Ottoshoop and other dolomite caves near Molopo and elsewhere, while Mafikeng hosts the International Gliding Championships.

The Bophirima region offers some of South Africa's best 4x4 routes. For those who prefer chancing their luck at the casino to risking their necks on rock faces or 4x4 trails, the North West has it all - at Sun City/Lost City, Morula Sun and the Carousel.

The Mafikeng Museum contains exhibits from the Siege of Mafekeng (now Mafikeng) and has been developed to take its part in the official centenary celebrations of the Anglo/Boer War / SA War & Siege in the period 1999-2002. Historic tours of the town can be arranged through the curator of the museum and local tour operators.

Also of interest to history-minded people, is Maratiwa House, the home of Silas Molema and Sol Plaatjie, the celebrated Black journalist and founding member of the ANC (African National Congress) who wrote a well-known history of the Siege from his unique vantage point. Mafikeng also played an important world role as the site where the Boy Scout Movement was established by Lord Baden-Powell during the Siege. Much local history is also on display in the Museum and town.

The surrounds of Mafikeng have further battle relics - Kanon Kopje and Warren's Fort and tribal history such as the kgotla or tribal meeting place of the Barolong Boo-Ratshidi people which has been in use since the 1850s. It now holds the bust of Kgosi Besele Montshioa.
The Marico district includes rock paintings by early San and Bushmen people and an old watermill (now a national monument) on the farm Naauwpoort. Also in the district, at Mabotsa, is the ruin of the first mission erected by David Livingstone.
