Set on 10 000-hectares of dramatic terrain consisting of open grass plains, indigenous Fynbos and undulating valleys surrounded by the Outeniqua Mountains, Gondwana Game Reserve is different to any other safari destination in South Africa. The setting is remote yet easily accessible to the Garden Route with its beautiful beaches and some of the best golf courses in the world, and only four-hours from Cape Town. The area is also well known for its moderate year-round climate.

An extensive rehabilitation programme has been initiated, which includes the introduction of the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) onto the reserve. Endangered Cape mountain zebra, grey rhebok, kudu, red hartebeest, springbok and eland have also been introduced, along with many other species. Safaris are conducted in open game viewing vehicles in the malaria-free reserve, and horse-back safaris are available in a fenced off area of the reserve.

Fynbos Camp was the first lodge to open, and exclusive accommodation includes 12 superior suites and 12 deluxe suites. The Royal Kraal will open in late 2009 and the innovative Khoi-San inspired design provides guests with a 360° view of the surroundings as well star-gazing through the glass ceiling from bed at night. Rooms will overlook two waterholes and across a valley towards the Outeniqua Mountains.

Gondwana’s goal is to continue to expand its total conservation area to provide the Western Cape with a large eco-tourism destination for the promotion of indigenous flora and fauna as well as the rehabilitation of wetland areas currently under threat from invasive alien species. Gondwana has already reintroduced the first endangered black rhino to the Western Cape from where they historically occurred.

In developing the reserve, every attempt was made to reduce potential impact on the environment. Areas of indigenous vegetation were protected and left untouched. Gondwana’s water supply is completely self-sufficient utilising its own streams. Strict water usage controls and restrictions are applied to all buildings to preserve this natural resource.

The year-round temperate climate is attested to by the fact that Mossel Bay and the surrounding areas have been proclaimed by the Guinness Book of Records to have the second most moderate climate in the world, next to Hawaii.
