The Phantom Forest Eco Reserve, on the southern Cape coast of South Africa, in the heart of the magnificent Garden Route... whispers a very special magic.
Nestling in the Afromontane Forest, just seven kilometres from Knysna, with endless views, shared only with our Fish Eagles, the large and elevated luxury 'tree suites' are an African celebration of colour and textures.
Experience the evocative sounds... scents... and tastes of Africa... at their very best!
Privately owned, within 137 hectares of nature reserve on the Knysna Rive the Phantom Forest offers a unique bio-diversity of Afromontane forest, Cape coastal fynbos and estuarine wetland. There are over 150 bird species, bush pig, bushbuck, grysbok, the rare blue duiker (one of Africa's smallest antelope), and a variety of smaller game.Emphasis is placed on the use of sustainable methods of construction. Alien vegetation, gleaned directly from our eco-restoration programme, has been utilised in floors, furniture, roofs and boardwalks. Drawing inspiration directly from nature, a harmonious balance has been created, from ragged thatch rising into the forest canopy, to wood shingle and a 'freshwater' nature pool. In true eco-terms, man's intrusion in our wonderful natural environment has been graciously accepted by both flora and fauna.
Arrived at Gatehouse ~ met by Bush pig sculpture, Frank and Furter! Transferred to Bush vehicle ~ our Phantom adventure has begun! We heard a Fish Eagle cry, and a door softly closed... the door of a rushed & noisy world.|What bliss...to be at one with Nature in all her glory ~ sounds, scents, the glory of a Knysna Loerie in flight ~ the fleeting glimpse of the shy Bushbuck.... the heart stopping sunsets...the symphony of birdsong greeting the African dawn...
Shall I wander thru' the timeless forest... and dream of times gone by...
...or shall I canoe up the Knysna River where the Malachite Kingfishers play...
.or shall I just lie by the pool and read... or settle on a delectable picnic in a secret place.
