Winelands Golf Lodges are situated on the outskirts of Stellenbosch just 45 minutes from Cape Town and 20 minutes from the city’s International Airport. It is one of the most popular golfing destinations in South Africa.

Adding to the popularity, is it's position on the famous Stellenbosch Wine Route, as well as the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Superbly serviced, and with a spectacular golf course right on the doorstep, it’s not surprising that Winelands Golf Lodges is such a sought-after destination... especially with golfers.

Some of the finest tourist attractions in the world are to be found in nearby Cape Town. From the celebrated Table Mountain, to the pristine Clifton beaches, from fabulous Waterfront shopping to restaurants, and the infamous Robben Island, it is a city that provides visitors with an indelible impression and unforgettable memories.

Slightly further afield, but still within an easy day-trip, there are plenty for non-golfers too. From whale watching in the picturesque town of Hermanus, to shark-cage diving, hiking trails and nature walks. Winelands Golf Lodges make the perfect starting point... and the best place in which to end the day.

GOLF

The 18-hole De Zalze Golf Course with its rolling fairways, water expanses and majestic views is currently ranked fourth in the Western Cape and 23rd in South Africa. The wooded banks of the Blaauwklippen River which runs along several of the fairways, adds to the visually pleasing landscape while at the same time providing unique golfing challenges.

Designed by renowned golf course architect, Peter Matkovich, it is one of only 14 courses countrywide to receive the Compleat Golfer’s Five Star Experience award. De Zalze Golf Course is great for play in all seasons making it exciting for golfers who dare to play the rough with the smooth.

The course was substantially upgraded at the commencement of the development of the residential component of the estate. So, with it’s superbly manicured fairways and putting greens, it’s not surprising that De Zalze Golf Course was recently placed 13th in the list of 30 Best Conditioned courses. The club and course provide an excellent venue for all golf events having already hosted the World Team Amateur Championships in 2006.

The thatched and elevated clubhouse is a spacious and beautifully appointed facility, with an elegant bar and light meal area, an expansive terrace overlooking the course, and comfortable, well-appointed locker rooms. The golf lifestyle shop provides all that could be wished for in the line of golf equipment and apparel.

The club offers golf cart and pull trolleys for hire, and balls for the driving range are included in the green fee.

Besides De Zalze Golf Club, there are many other fine courses to play within easy driving distance. These include courses in the Winelands and adjacent coastal areas, as well as in Cape Town itself.

Attractions

Apart from excellent golf, the Estate also offers cycling, walks amongst the vineyards, visits to the winery and delicious meals at it's restaurant. But there are also many wonderful trips, tours and excursions to be had in the surrounding areas.

Wine Routes

The Stellenbosch Wine Route is arguably South Africa’s most famous, and the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin area includes 106 cellars – most of which are open to the public. Here you can enjoy a relaxing day tasting some of the country’s best wines. This favourite Wine Route is guaranteed to take you to the region’s top-ranked estates (both historic and modern).

There are also other excellent wine routes in nearby Franschhoek, Groot Drakenstein and Paarl.

The University Town of Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch was established along the Eerste (First) River by Dutch settlers way back in 1679. Today it is home to one of South Africa’s finest universities... and the oldest music school. The town is an important cultural centre with many galleries and museums that exhibit both national and international art collections. It boasts many sites of historical and architectural interest, showcasing the country’s best examples of Cape Dutch, Victorian and Georgian building. Restaurants and coffee bars abound along with many antique shops and designer boutiques. All of which combine to make Stellenbosch a ‘must do’ on every visitor’s list.

The heart of the town beats in the oak-lined Dorp Street with its venerable old buildings. This is the University’s main thoroughfare, where modern student life sits comfortably alongside a rich heritage. The University, which offers almost every outdoor activity, has produced many of the country’s sporting heroes, including over 155 rugby Springboks.

Walks, hikes and trails

These range from an easy 5.3km scenic walk to the challenging 17.1km Panorama Trail and the 18km Swartboskloof Trail. Visit Granny’s Forest at Helderberg Farm for easy walking trails and even an overnight shelter. The longer 24km full-day Vineyard Hiking Trail is best enjoyed in autumn or spring. It starts on the slopes of the Papegaaiberg, above the Oude Libertas Centre, and meanders through the forestry plantations, vineyards, olive groves and coastal renosterveld.

Jonkershoek & Assegaaibosch Nature Reserves

The Jonkershoek Mountains and valley lie above Stellenbosch and are part of the Boland mountain range. Together these two popular reserves cover over 10,000 hectares of pristine natural beauty. Fynbos, protea and over 1,100 plant species are present in the reserves, while leopard, baboon, black eagles, klipspringer, sugarbirds, mongoose and spotted eagle owls are all at ‘home’ here. Both Reserves are open daily for walks/hikes, fishing, mountain biking and horse riding in the mountains for a small admittance fee.

Spier Wine Estate

Cheetah Outreach Programme

Spier has made land available to a group of hand-raised cheetahs in the care of the Cheetah Outreach Programme. Learn more about these incredible cats from a distance, or get up close and personal and even step inside an enclosure. Entrance donations help fund the Cheetah Outreach Programme.

Eagle Encounters

Watch how ancient falconry techniques are used to train them to hunt. Flying demonstrations are held daily.

Horse Riding

Trail rides are open to all horse riders, regardless of experience. Supervised pony and cart rides are available on the lawns of the Spier Estate for children. Open 12h00 to 16h00 weekends, public holidays and during peak season.

Oom Samie se Winkel (Uncle Sam’s shop)

This fascinating shop is situated near the lower end of Dorp Street in central Stellenbosch. Inside you’ll find all things South African... including wines from the local wine estates, antiques, confectionary, sweets, jams, furniture and curios

Burgerhuis Museum

Originally built as a private home in 1797 the Burgerhuis is regarded as a typical dwelling of the more well-to-do citizen... and the museum captures perfectly the elegance of the 17th and 18th centuries. It is a good example of the famous Cape Dutch style of architecture, which experts have described as “the most lyrical architectural style in the world.” In fact the South African artist, J H Pierneef, described its gable as one of the most beautiful in the Cape.

Other interesting places worth a visit are the Stellenryk Wijn Museum, also in Dorp Street, the Oude Meester Brandy Museum in Old Strand Road, the Van Rhyn Brandy Cellar on the outskirts of town and even the University of Stellenbosch’s campus, which has the most beautiful grounds and includes a Botanical Garden.

Butterfly World

A unique attraction, especially for youngsters, Butterfly World is the largest free flying park for butterflies in southern Africa. Inside the flight display house, the life cycle of the butterfly is clearly shown, and if visitors are lucky, they may even see a butterfly emerging from its pupa. The park is open every day of the year except 25 December from 9am to 5pm, except June, July and August, when the opening hours are 10am to 4pm. Butterfly World is located near the junction of the Paarl, Stellenbosch and Wellington Wine Routes, on Route 44 – just off the N1 at Exit 47.

Groot Drakenstein Correctional Facility

Formerly known as the Victor Verster maximum-security prison it was renamed in 2000. Odd to find a prison listed under ‘Attractions’ but it is of interest because it was the last place in which Nelson Mandela was incarcerated. In fact it was through these prison gates, and not those of Pollsmoor in Cape Town or from Robben Island, that Mandela walked to freedom in 1990. Surprisingly, the prison resembles a boys’ school rather than a security prison and its surroundings of grape vines and rolling hills is equally incongruous. A larger-than-life bronze statue of Mandela was recently unveiled, in the very place where he took those first steps as a free man.
