Cape Town Safaris

You don’t need to fly north for a Big 5 safari. A short drive from Cape Town, private reserves in the Karoo and on the Garden Route offer game drives, comfortable lodges and malaria-free wildlife viewing — ideal if you are combining Table Mountain, the Winelands and the coast.

Aquila is close enough for a day safari. Sanbona, Inverdoorn and Mont Eco reward an overnight stay, and Gondwana fits neatly into a Garden Route itinerary.

Pilanesberg Game Reserve

Pilanesberg sits in the crater of a volcano formed more than a billion years ago. Rings of hills, open valleys and Mankwe Dam make for varied game drives — and all of the Big 5 are here.

Choose a full-service bush lodge, a self-catering villa, or a Sun City hotel right on the doorstep. For a private, guests-only safari inside the park, see the Black Rhino Game Reserve below.

Black Rhino Game Reserve

Black Rhino Game Reserve is a private concession on the north-western side of the Pilanesberg National Park, with its own secured gate. Elephant, black and white rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard are all seen here, and its sweet veld contrasts with the mostly sour veld of the main park.

Only guests staying at its lodges may enter, so game drives are quiet and guided, in open vehicles. A fence-drop agreement lets wildlife and lodge vehicles move into the greater Pilanesberg — and you can still self-drive the main park on another day.

Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe lies in the far north of the North West Province, hard against the Botswana border. At roughly 75 000 hectares it is one of the largest game reserves in the country — and with no day visitors or self-drive traffic, sightings feel private.

The reserve is run as a joint venture between the State, the private sector and local communities, several of which own lodges inside it.

What is the difference between Pilanesberg and the Black Rhino Game Reserve?

Black Rhino is a private concession inside the north-western Pilanesberg with its own gate. Only guests of its lodges may enter, and game drives are guided. The main Pilanesberg park is open to day visitors and self-drive.

Can I do a Big 5 safari as a day trip from Cape Town?

Yes — Aquila Private Game Reserve, just over two hours away, offers day safaris. Sanbona and Inverdoorn are for overnight guests only.

How far is Pilanesberg from Johannesburg?

About two hours by road, roughly 150 km from the Gauteng metro.

Can I stay at Sun City and still go on safari?

Can I visit Madikwe on a day trip?
