Flying to a safari: practical tips

  • Pack soft bags

Light aircraft to lodge airstrips take soft bags only — usually 20 kg plus 5 kg hand luggage per person. Leave hard suitcases at the airport or your hotel.

  • Leave time to connect

Allow at least 2 hours between a domestic flight and a safari shuttle, and 3 hours after an international arrival.

  • Check in early

Be at the airport 2 hours before domestic and 3 hours before international flights. Federal Air check-in closes 1 hour before departure.

  • Use official transport

Take the Gautrain, an authorised taxi, Uber or Bolt from the marked zones, or a pre-booked transfer. Ignore people offering rides in the arrivals hall.

  • One time zone

All of South Africa is on SAST (UTC+2) all year — there is no daylight-saving change.

  • Let us book it

We book Federal Air seats, road transfers and charters with your lodge, so the timings line up. Send us your flight details.
